J ana Čulek is an architect, urbanist, researcher. She is the founder of Studio Fabula, an architecture and urban design office which was founded in Delft (Netherlands), but is now also active in Zagreb. She graduated as an architect and urbanist from the Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb in 2013, after which she also completed the postgraduate master program from The Berlage Center for Advanced Studies in Architecture and Urban Design as a part of the Berlage Generation XXV. She gained her PhD in architecture from the TU Delft Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment in 2023, researching utopia as a critical method in architecture and literature. Since 2023 she is part of the teaching staff at the Urban Studies postmaster specialist program led by DeltaLab in Rijeka. Her design and research interests revolve around the discursive aspects of architecture as a discipline and its potentials to address complex and multifaced spatial and societal issues. She uses architectural representation, storytelling, and narrative structures, and employs fiction, utopia, and other creative methods to engage with the world we inhabit. Working within the borders of architecture, urbanism, illustration and storytelling, her work critically addresses some of the most pertinent issues of today including the spatial implications of the climate crisis, inclusivity and cohabitation within urban environments, and urban regeneration, adaptability and reuse. She questions and expands on the established roles and tools of the architect through a widening and transdisciplinary approach whose aim is to allow for new readings of our surroundings as well as new tools and methods for operating within it as spatial practitioners.
